Member of National and Tennessee State Main Street

As a Main Street organization we are charged with promoting our downtown district and the small businesses located there. We need to attract both local residents and visitors. We do this by highlighting our downtown businesses mainly through social media posts. We also organize events to bring people into the downtown area. We get a lot of visitors from Columbia, Spring Hill and Lawrence County. We are seeing more people from Franklin and Nashville. The Main Street office also serves as the Visitors Center.

History

Founded in 2020Mount Pleasant's downtown are was once the heart of a thriving phosphate town. In the late 1980s, the mines and chemical companies closed their doors and Mount Pleasant's small downtown became almost a ghost town. Periodically revitalization efforts were attempted, but could never be sustained. In 2010, there was a public/private partnership formed to revitalize the historic downtown area. A local businessman bought a few of the buildings and began to make improvements. In 2010 the city was accepted into the new Tennessee Downtowns program, essentially a Main Street program without a director. Led by the Director of the Mount Pleasant Community Development Corporation (CDC), the 4 points of Main Street were utilized and a revitalization plan was adopted. A streetscape plan was developed in 2014 and should finally begin this Spring. In 2020, the CDC Director job description was revised to include part-time Main Street director. With this change, application was made to the Tennessee Main Street program and Mount Pleasant was accepted into the Tennessee Main Street Program. In 2021, we became an accredited National Main Street program.
